PT Engineering (as a subconsultant to Dewberry, Inc.) developed a traffic capacity analysis for I-5870, which proposes to modify the I-440/Ridge Road interchange and convert it to a full-movement interchange with a connection to SR 1670 (Blue Ridge Road) at Crabtree Valley Avenue. Synchro/SimTraffic was utilized to perform the intersection capacity analysis and FREEVAL was utilized to analyze the I-440 freeway operations. The model network included 30+ intersections for the 2018 existing year and two build alternatives. The purpose of the analysis was to determine if the preliminary designs would operate acceptably and for a comparison to the existing conditions. The build capacity analysis included multiple alternative intersection designs including a diverging diamond interchange at I-440/Glenwood Avenue and a continuous flow intersection and echelon interchange at Glenwood Avenue and Blue Ridge Rd.
